Análisis de riesgo de inundación por tsunamis en Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Abstract

El análisis de riesgo de inundación por tsunamis en Puntarenas, Costa Rica, revela la vulnerabilidad de la región ante sismos tsunamigénicos que pudiesen ocurrir frente al Golfo de Nicoya y en la zona de subducción de Colombia. La altura de inundación en Puntarenas se evaluó simulando numéricamente la propagación de tsunamis potenciales generados por sismos locales en la Fosa de Costa Rica, y por sismos remotos similares al sismo de Colombia del 31 de enero de 1906. En ambos casos la máxima altura del tsunami en Puntarenas es similar (3.5 m), sin embargo, el riesgo de inundación depende del estado de la marea, ya que Puntarenas está a 2.0 m sobre el nivel medio del mar y la marea oscila ± 1.5 m con respecto a este nivel.
