Las infecciones relacionadas con la asistencia sanitaria (IRAS) se definen como aquellas que ocurren en un paciente durante el proceso de cuidados en un centro sanitario y que no estuviera presente o en periodo de incubación al ingreso. Pueden contraerse en hospitales, centros de asistencia prolongada, residencias de ancianos, hospitalización domiciliaria, y en cualquier entorno en que se preste asistencia sanitaria. Las IRAS constituyen un grave problema de salud pública, dada su magnitud, trascendencia y consecuencias, potencial evitabilidad y costes. Las IRAS están causadas cada vez con más frecuencia por bacterias multirresistentes a antibióticos. Las resistencias surgen por mutaciones desarrolladas por el microorganismo o la adquisición de genes de resistencia y son consecuencia, en gran parte, de un uso inapropiado de antibióticos.
