La hemorragia uterina anormal (HUA) se define como un sangrado originado en el útero cuyas características no coinciden con las del patrón menstrual esperado según la edad y condiciones biológicas de la paciente. Durante la menopausia cualquier sangrado que proviene del útero se cataloga como anormal. Durante la edad reproductiva, la hemorragia uterina puede coincidir con la menstruación o aparecer en tiempo inesperado. Esta última eventualidad será considerada como anormal. La menstruación excesiva se denomina menorragia, se caracteriza por un aumento del volumen de sangrado, y también se estima anormal. La Hemorragia uterina anormal es un problema frecuente y, aunque se trata de una afección benigna, su prevalencia le confiere una gran repercusión sanitaria y social.
