In view of the large number of problems that the traditional theory of the “Adverbial Functions (Compléments Circonstancielles)” raises, this article tries to put some order in this reality, so complex and heterogeneous. To this end, following some previous works, we have made two distinctions: circumstantial elements linked to the utterance and the modality/circumstantial complements; internal/external circumstantial complements. Due to such differences, we have also considered the distinction between “supplement”, “sensu stricto”, an internal circumstantial complement.
