In 1598 Francisco Sánchez, "el Brocense", published some commentaries on two difficult works, the Ibis by Ovid and the Griphus by Ausonius. The text has not to be fixed by the Humanist, but the editor gives it to Brocense once it has been shaped. Then Brocense only has to note and comment or it. However, Francisco Sánchez chooses one determined reading of manuscripts and refuses others. Sometimes, none of the readings offered by the manuscripts convinces him at all and he prefers the conjecture. Therefore, Brocense, in his notes on Griphus textual criticism by Ausonius, makes use of two methods on textual criticism: Historicism (he always works with readings attested by the manuscripts) and Rationalism (again he admits one reading and refuses the others, or he makes use of the conjecture. So, we prove that both textual criticism methods live together in Brocense's editions.
