Abstract

Las infecciones debidas a patógenos fúngicos oportunistas se han incrementado considerablemente en los últimos años en relación con el aumento de la tasa de población de pacientes inmunocomprometidos, con alteración de las barreras de protección o sometidos a antibioterapia de amplio espectro. Las especies aisladas más frecuentemente pertenecen al género "Candida" o "Aspergillus". Microorganismos que se consideraban contaminantes se confirman actualmente como patógenos en estos pacientes. En la práctica clínica, aunque la especie del género "Candida" encontrada con más frecuencia es "Candida albicans", otras especies de Candida no albicans como "Candida glabrata", "Candida tropicalis" y "Candida krusei" están emergiendo como patógenos oportunistas, y su frecuencia se ha visto aumentada proporcionalmente incluso más que la de "C. albicans". Así, los índices de aislamiento de "C. tropicalis" en todo el mundo aumentaron un 2,9% en el periodo de tiempo comprendido entre 1997 y 2003. El género "Candida" presenta una serie de factores de virulencia que facilitan la colonización y la infección en el hospedador. El objetivo de esta tesis doctoral fue la determinación de estos factores de patogenicidad en "Candida tropicalis".

Infections due to opportunistic fungal pathogens have increased significantly in recent years. "Candida" and "Aspergillus" are the most frequent microorganisms isolated from clinical samples. Although "Candida albicans" is the specie of Candida found most frequently, other species different to "Candida albicans" ("Candida glabrata", "Candida tropicalis" and "Candida krusei") are emerging as opportunistic pathogens. The incidence of "C. tropicalis" increased (2.9%) between 1997 and 2003. "Candida" has a number of virulence factors that facilitate colonization and infection in the host. The aim of this thesis was the determination of these virulence factors in "Candida tropicalis".
