Abstract

The “Comuna 13” neighborhood, in Medellín, Colombia, there are over ten alternative means of communication that are looking to generate processes of citizen participation and overcome the stigma that the state and mainstream media have constructed about this zone as a scene of confrontation between urban guerrilla groups and the combined forces of army, police and paramilitaries and also as an area of chaos and high crime rates. The alternative media propose nonviolence, the fight for the construction of other meanings and representations, as well as the promotion of a culture of peace. The purpose of this study is to try to establish the way in which these alternative forms of media, both print and digital, have contributed to the appropriation of communication as a common good and how they have promoted the construction and recuperation of spaces for citizens by means of non-violent resistance during the periods 2002-2018. The research is qualitative and uses the tools required for this focus. One of the findings is that these forms of media have been crucial in the generation of a narrative from the community itself and from this they have managed to position, both nationally and internationally, other social representations related to the potential of its habitants in terms of sport, art and community organizing. They have also been a means to showcase strategies of nonviolence with the purpose of offering young people an alternative to the war. Another essential contribution has been the positioning of their own collective memory, in contrast to the official narrative about violent events that have occurred in this territory, like operation Orión. This research results in the identification of some key elements that have allowed these alternative forms of media to survive in a context of urban conflict and limited resources for their operation.
