Abstract

This literature review compiles the main benefits and threats associated with meliponiculture, focusing on the Colombian context from a holistic perspective that also encompasses the ecosystem services associated with pollination. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using various search tools to obtain up-to-date scientific information that would answer the question of whether the sustainable use of stingless bees (meliponiculture) can bring benefits from a comprehensive environmental perspective. A total of 74 bibliographic references were selected using a rigorous search methodology to address this question. The result was the systematization and categorization of each of the benefits and threats facing meliponiculture, including a regulatory analysis for the Colombian context, supported by primary and secondary scientific information. The numerous environmental benefits associated with the breeding of native stingless bees (ANSA) are evident, but it is also clear that this practice faces multiple threats and limitations, jeopardizing the ecosystem service of pollination, the country's food security, and the dynamics of food webs. ANSA could be indicators of what is happening with other native pollinators. This work provides elements as a basis for the sustainable use, conservation, institutional strengthening, and other key aspects related to the context of native stingless bees.
