Abstract

The bacteriology career in Colombia operates within a field of action that includes areas such as diagnosis, health promotion, disease prevention, quality management, scientific research, administration, and teaching. However, biotechnological advances in recent years and changes in the country's epidemiological profile have necessitated the updating of bacteriology curricula. This essay aims to develop an analytical reflection on the curricula of accredited high-quality bacteriology and clinical laboratory academic programs in Colombia. In Colombia, the first clinical laboratories emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the need to continue research and provide clinical diagnostic support. Consequently, auxiliary personnel were required for laboratories, and over the years, academic training evolved until bacteriology became a professional discipline. In recent decades, curricular reforms have shaped study plans by integrating other biological, medical, administrative, and humanistic sciences. For this reason, an analytical reflection on the curricula of accredited bacteriology and clinical laboratory programs is conducted, comparing similarities and differences. Additionally, proposals are made to improve these programs, encouraging research, scientific and technological updates, and fostering a stronger understanding of the bacteriologist’s occupational profile, aligning it with society’s needs.
