Abstract

Artificial wetlands are currently an alternative for the treatment of domestic wastewater. A deep research was performed showing the effectiveness of these systems in the removal of the following parameters: Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), total phosphorus, total nitrogen, total coliforms and suspended solids; which were evaluated in seven (7) subsurface flow artificial wetlands, implemented as pilot studies in the department of Cundinamarca, using different species of macrophytes, among which the following stand out: Juncus sp, Cyperus papyrus and Cortaderia selloana. This research was based on a bibliographic review methodology, derived from secondary quantitative documentary research with a correlational level, identifying that the parameters with the highest percentage of removal are the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and suspended solids, in addition, it is highlighted that the macrophyte or aquatic plant most implemented in wetlands is the Junco (Jucus sp). Therefore, these wetlands act as complementary systems to primary treatments and are an effective alternative for the elimination of pollutant parameters in domestic wastewater. Especialización
