Globalization has generated changes in traditional economic and commercial models, causing the creation of new legal figures, international agreements or treaties, which allows the different countries involved to create infrastructures and communication bridges that facilitate the exchange of goods and services. Colombia, being an emerging economy, has been betting on the creation and ratification of different international agreements such as Free Trade Agreements (TLC in Spanish) or the signing of cooperation agreements with different countries or economic blocs. This has great effects on the different socio-environmental, economic and political sectors of the country. Therefore, to understand the different effects that these international treaties and agreements have generated on these sectors, this document presented an analysis of the main international agreements ratified by the Colombian government, emphasizing the TLC with the United States, through the review of news and scientific articles focused on the subject. This made it possible to show the existence of positive or negative impacts of these agreements on different sectors of Colombian society. The foregoing made it possible to show how the low quality of political representation, institutional weakness, the scarce and/or inefficient investment in national public works and the great competitive differences between national and international economic sectors, are the main factors that trigger the presence of negative socio-environmental impacts associated with international economic agreements and treaties.
