La limpieza étnica, llevada a cabo por el régimen de Belgrado en el territorio de la antigua Yugoslavia en la década de los 90, fue determinante en la desintegración del territorio que para 1918 era conocido como el Reino de los serbios, croatas y eslovenos gobernado por Pedro I y que el mariscal Tito había gobernado tras la segunda guerra mundial. Kosovo fue uno de los más afectados en la búsqueda de Milošević (también conocido como el Carnicero de los Balcanes), por crear un Estado étnicamente puro violando de esta manera los Derechos Humanos. Finalmente el conflicto, de causas no sólo étnicas sino también religiosas y políticas entre musulmanes y serbios, acabó cuando la OTAN intervino en Kosovo con una campaña de ataque aéreo en 1999.
