Babesiosis humana en Asturias. Una emergencia sanitaria

Abstract

Introducción: La babesiosis es una zoonosis causada por protozoos del género Babesia, transmitidos por garrapatas del género Ixodes, vectores también de Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), agente etiológico de la borreliosis. La coexistencia de ambas infecciones es posible, especialmente en regiones como Asturias, donde ambos patógenos están presentes. Aunque comparten sintomatología general (fiebre, astenia, mialgias), la babesiosis se diferencia por su potencial gravedad debido a la destrucción eritrocitaria que puede provocar anemia hemolítica. Objetivos: Estimar la seroprevalencia de Babesia divergens en pacientes con serología positiva para B. burgdorferi s.l. en Asturias y evaluar si la presencia simultánea de anticuerpos frente a ambas infecciones tiene implicaciones clínicas. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo de una cohorte de 120 pacientes con serología IgG positiva para B. burgdorferi s.l., residentes en Asturias entre 2015 y 2017. Los tests serológicos se realizaron en el Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA)
