Taking Menendez Pidal’s dialectal classification made in his work of 1906 as starting point, as well as others made by R. J. Penny, F. García González and others, a survey was made with the aim of dealing with oriental variety of the Astur-Leonese area; at the same I will also deal with time, the linguistic situation from Cantabria where we can find two clearly separated areas; the north-oriental one and the Santiyanesa one which is great deal responsible for the continuation of the area in the east side; another one south- oriental or reinosino-tresmierense really influenced by the Castilian language together with Las Encartaciones from Vizcaya. A possible internal organization of each of these two areas is also dealt with as well as the historic process that took to the deep castellanization of Cantabria.
