Abstract

En retrospectiva, las guerras del Golfo y de Iraq se conciben como conflictos muy distintos: la primera es corta y resulta en una aplastante victoria norteamericana, mientras que la segunda es extremadamente impopular, se alarga durante años, y acaba convirtiéndose en un pozo económico sin fin. La investigación que sigue trata de demostrar que esas percepciones no reflejan la verdad al completo. Por medio de un análisis de encuestas y una reflexión sobre el contexto histórico de las guerras, se da paso a una compresión más detalla de las situaciones que engendran a las guerras y las situaciones que las guerras engendran, y argumento que, si bien ambas solo fueron verdaderamente populares inmediatamente después de comenzar, nunca dan paso a un sentimiento de rechazo general. La historia de la intervención estadounidense en Iraq es una de ambivalencia y mediocridad: incluso cuando sus arquitectos la imaginan un proyecto de empoderamiento nacionalista, la economía, aquello cuyos efectos la población nota sin necesidad de que se le recuerde existe, se impone como clave al entendimiento de sus vidas.
