Abstract

Giuseppe Baretti evidencia una verdadera pasión por España y su cultura, erigiéndose en uno de los hispanófilos más acreditados del Settecento italiano. Ejemplo de esta admiración es la constante afición cervantina que exhibió a lo largo de su fértil itinerario intelectual, desde su efímera incursión en el teatro musical con el Don Chisciotte in Venezia, pasando por la malograda traducción inglesa de la inmortal novela y las constantes referencias a Cervantes en su epistolario, hasta arribar al Tolondrón, último eslabón de un notable recorrido literario y crítico en el que el escritor polemiza vigorosamente con la edición cervantina del erudito escocés Bowle. El intermezzo Don Quijote en Venecia (1752-1753), redactado para el teatro de la Ópera italiana de Londres, no llegó a publicarse en vida del autor. Esta breve pieza constituye una libre recreación, en clave farsesca, de dos motivos quijotescos bien reconocibles: el episodio del retablo de maese Pedro (II, 25-26), cuya teatralidad y espectacularidad era bien conocida, y el encantamiento de Dulcinea (II, 10), reelaborados ambos en el marco del bullicio y del ambiente festivo del carnaval veneciano de mediados del xviii. En este volumen Franco Quinziano (investigador del GREC-Universidad de Oviedo y del IEMYRhd-Universidad de Salamanca) ofrece una edición bilingüe, anotada con las variantes que presentan las dos fases redaccionales del manuscrito autógrafo y precedida por una introducción en la que se examinan los mecanismos y recursos que vertebran la comicidad del intermezzo, ampliamente deudores de la afamada commedia dell’arte y orientados a acentuar los rasgos caricaturescos del hidalgo manchego.
