Abstract

La transferencia de agua de lastre de los buques ha sido reconocida como una fuente importante para la transmisión de organismos dañinos y patógenos más allá de sus barreras naturales. Como tal, puede considerarse una amenaza significativa para los mares del mundo y la salud, bienes y recursos del ser humano. Dicha transferencia fue regulada por el Convenio Internacional para el Control y la Gestión de Aguas de lastre y sedimentos de los buques en 2004 (Convenio BWM), donde se definieron las normas globales sobre los requisitos de gestión de aguas y sedimentos del lastre. Como introducción se realizará una breve reseña histórica de la regulación internacional en materia de gestión del agua de lastre. El Desarrollo contiene una descripción de los métodos de tratamientos, centrándonos en la irradiación de luz ultravioleta y estudiando, en último lugar, el caso real del buque Cristina Masaveu que acaba de cumplir diez años visitando regularmente los atraques de Northfleet y West Thurrock, situados en la zona de mayor concentración de sólidos en suspensión del Estuario del Támesis.
