Este trabajo se ocupa, de manera breve, del origen del vigente sistema electoral español, nacido hace 200 años. Se analizan las normas, las instituciones a las que sirven y las ideas que las inspiraron. El sistema electoral español del siglo XXI no se puede comprender sin conocer el origen y desarrollo del derecho de voto, de la administración electoral, del censo, del sistema de voto y de los controles electorales.
