Abstract

The celebration of the tercentenary of the death of Lope de Vega in 1935 gave relevance to the author’s name, which appeared frequently in newspapers. Studying the treatment that Lope and his work received during that year in ABC, a conservative and monarchist daily newspaper from Madrid, we obtain a perfect example of a very common practice during the year under investigation: the ideological use of the playwright’s work and figure in order to associate them with certain values and thus send a message that had little or nothing to do with him. Through the study of articles, news and theater reviews, the article intends to show the use that ABC made of the Fénix in his tercentenary and the image of him and his work it sought to promote.
