Abstract

Julia Espín y Pérez de Collbrand (Madrid, 1838-1906) fue la segunda hija del compositor Joaquín Espín y Guillén. Conocida por ser la musa de Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, su faceta como cantante ha quedado relegada a un segundo plano, sin existir estudios biográficos exhaustivos hasta época reciente. Julia Espín desarrolló su brevísima carrera como prima donna fuera de España, desde su debut en Milán en 1866 hasta 1870, cuando una afección vocal le alejó de los escenarios. Para comprender los arquetipos femeninos que simbolizó Julia Espín, es necesario conocer su periplo biográfico y profesional, pues en él se encuentran los elementos que determinaron y condicionaron los diferentes estereotipos femeninos que se le atribuyeron durante su vida (y también después de su fallecimiento, en 1906), donde cobra especial importancia el estudio de la interrelación entre la imagen idealizada asignada a Julia Espín por Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, y el análisis de las características (dramáticas y musicales) de los roles operísticos que interpretó en su corta carrera como prima donna, que confluyen en el arquetipo de heroína romántica propuesto por Naomí André desde el ámbito de la Musicología Feminista.
