Abstract

Many people who are being treated in Norwegian psychomotor physiotherapy (NPMF) struggle with bodily, relational and emotional ailments that can be understood as resulting from relational trauma. They will often have a need for help to break the alertness of the body, to feel safer in their own body in the present. There may be challenges associated with balancing the treatment approach so that it becomes tolerable. The purpose of the study was to seek knowledge about how people with relational trauma experience exploring contact with their own body through psychomotor treatment. With particular emphasis on what can make it possible to manage such a treatment process if it is experienced challenging. This is to get a deeper insight into how the treatment process can be made tolerable and safe. The empire is provided through qualitative in-depth interviews. The sample consists of 4 adult women who are under NPMF treatment, where it focuses on re-establishing contact with their own body. The analysis is inspired by systematic text condensation. The findings show thatincreased contact with one`s own body can lead to greater freedom in body posture, respiratory pattern and movement, which in turn can be linked to better ability for self- esteem, self -regulation and coping. At the same time, increased contact with one's own body could trigger shame, discomfort and insecurity. Confidence in the therapist, and confidence in one's own physical resources, was important in mastering challenges along the way. The therapist's behavior was described as essential to the opportunity to experience benefit, security and growth by taking place in one`s own body. Underlined in light of the theory of attachment, the security circle and intersubjectivity, the findings emphasize the importance of psychomotor physiotherapists seeking knowledge and awareness of how to appear safe, clear and emotionally accessible to the patient.
