Abstract

This master thesis is about connections between social relations, problem behavior and gender. The adolescents in the sample are ordinary Norwegian youth: some of them have challenges, while others do not. The purpose of this paper is to uncover connections between social relations and problem behavior, and to investigate whether gender has any effect on whether adolescents became involved in problem behavior or not. I investigated young people individually who have been in contact with the child welfare services and those who have not been, to get a better understanding of the differences between these groups. The main questions of the paper are: How we can understand the connection between weak relationships with parents, friends and school and the risk of problem behavior? How does gender play in these contexts? Do we find other patterns when it comes to the group of children who have recently been in contact with the child welfare service? The present paper uses data from a nationwide representative survey of Norwegian adolescents. The sample consists of 14578 secondary school pupils from municipalities who have used the supplementary module in the survey, which deals with contact with the support system. The analysis carried out cross-table analysis between gender, class levels, relationships with parents, school and friends and problem behavior, and logistical regression analyzes between gender, class levels, relationships with parents, school and friends and problem behavior, first for the entire sample, then for adolescents who have been in contact with the child welfare service and those who have not been there separately. From my analysis it emerges that strong relationships with parents and school affect problem behavior for both young people who have been in contact with the child welfare service and those who have not.
