Abstract

The paper begins by describing strategies proposed by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme to prioritise the fight against poverty on the world economic agenda. It subsequently examines the weakness of said strategies and causes thereof: the obsession for economic growth and the market as a means to achieve it. Finally, it submits that, in order to make the fight against poverty a real priority, it is not enough merely to mean well, but that economic goals in rich countries must be reoriented so as to rank welfare above economy, based on a perspective of deprivation rather than conglomeration.
