Abstract

According to Themistius, the synkriseis (spiritual camaraderie) between a philosopher and a king would be the origin of the success of all reign, making possible the Platonic axiom of a republic ruled by sages. In fact, this proposition of Themistius perfectly summarizes the common thread of this work and provides the adequate interpretive framework to understand the fruitful relationship intellectual, personal and political that had not only Constantine the Great and Eusebius of Caesarea, but also in later centuries Theodoric the Great and Cassiodorus, Sisebuto and Saint Isidore of Seville, Charlemagne and Alcuin of York, Charles the Bald and Scotus Erigena, Otto III and Gerberto de Aurillac, Federico II and Miguel Scoto, Carlos V el Sabio and Nicolás Oresme or Roberto II of Naples and Petrarca.
