Uno de los aspectos menos conocidos de la guerra que enfrentó a España y los Estados Unidos es el relativo a los servicios de inteligencia, lo que vulgarmente se conoce como espionaje. De hecho, al menos desde la crisis del "Virginius" en 1873, ambos países consideraron que la cuestión cubana les terminaría llevando aun enfrentamiento armado, por lo que se observaron con todo interés. Prueba de ello fue la atención con la que la Revista General de Marina siguió desde entonces los progresos de la marina estadounidense. De modo parecido, la Oficina de Inteligencia Naval americana (ONI), comenzó a recoger toda clase de información sobre los buques españoles.
One of the lesser-known aspects of the war between Spain and the United States is that of the intelligence services, which is commonly known as espionage. In fact, at least since the "Virginius" crisis in 1873, both countries considered that the Cuban question would end up leading to an armed confrontation, for which they were observed with all interest. Proof of this was the attention with which the Marine General Review has since followed the progress of the US Navy. Similarly, the American Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) began to collect all kinds of information about Spanish ships.
