Abstract

Mujeres (y algunos hombres) is a documentary project developed as part of a researchcreation process that reflects on the socially accepted gender roles and stereotypes in the municipality of Caloto, Cauca. Its objective was to carry out the development stage of a short documentary film from a phenomenological perspective, showcasing how women and men in the municipality understand their gender identity. The work is based on the assumption that these perceptions are deeply influenced by cultural factors, which may be at the root of various forms of violence against women. To explore this, a qualitative field investigation was conducted, based on participant observation in institutional and community spaces, and the application of interviews using the vox pop technique, collecting over 60 testimonies. The sample included individuals diverse in age, occupation, ethnic background, educational level, and social environment. Based on this research, a seven-minute documentary teaser was produced, with an expository narrative that weaves together the voices collected, prioritizing direct observation and the spontaneity of responses. The editing aims to create a mosaic of perceptions that, beyond revealing the presence of ingrained stereotypes, encourages reflection on how these vary depending on context, education level, upbringing, or proximity to urban life. While the findings partially support the initial hypothesis, they also highlight the need for deeper and ongoing study to design strategies that can mitigate gender-based violence from its cultural roots. This document outlines the entire creative and research process—from the project's conception to the completion of the teaser—and offers a committed perspective from a male author who, with sensitivity and critical distance, assumes the role of facilitator and observer in a territory shaped by cultural, social, and contextual dynamics that influence the construction of gender identities
