Abstract

Part of the environmental responsibility of organizations involves the collection, source separation of waste to promote its utilization. Environmental policies aim to have circular economy models that minimize impact on resources and generate solid foundations for sustainability. The objective of the present research project is to design a strategy for more efficient management of prioritized recyclable waste, based on circular economy principles, for the Unicentro shopping center in the city of Santiago de Cali. For the development of this research, a descriptive study with a mixed approach was used. Information collection techniques included interviews with 8 administrators of premises in the shopping center, as well as 384 surveys to a representative sample of recurring customers; finally, documentary review was applied to reports on waste collection and documentation of the Integrated Solid Waste Management System. The diagnosis conducted on the management of recyclable inorganic waste in the Unicentro Shopping Center reveals the existence of an Integrated Solid Waste Management System (SGIRS) that complies with established regulations and is oriented towards the utilization of solid waste, which constitutes a strength by providing a framework for implementing improvements. However, weaknesses were identified in education about source separation, lack of argumentation on the importance of recycling and reduction, as well as the need for greater provision and visibility of containers for separation, as indicated by regulations or color codes. These deficiencies are correctable in the short term, leading to the design of specific strategies. Strategies have been developed based on a crosssectional SWOT analysis and divided into three categories: general, targeted at traders, and customer-oriented. The participation of both internal and external actors of the Shopping Center has been taken into account, including visitors, customers, business owners, employees, and collaborators, making each strategy viable. To increase its reach in the medium term, the participation of external suppliers of the shopping center and of the different businesses operating in it is contemplated, which will contribute to a greater impact and sustainability of the initiative over time. The proposed actions are consistent with the SGIRS and are characterized by their participatory approach, with a special emphasis on education and proposing the use of incentives to motivate the participation of various actors in waste utilization initiatives
