Abstract

In this study, waste cooking oil was used to produce pure biodiesel through transesterification process; the product was then used to prepare biodiesel/diesel blends, tested using a direct injection diesel engine under environmental conditions in Cali, Colombia. Combustion results of these blends were compared, in proportions varying from 100% conventional diesel, to 100% biodiesel (B100). The lowest and highest CO, CO2, NOx and SO2 concentrations in the blend combustion gases were analyzed. Also, parameters such as water temperature at the radiator’s inlet and outlet, exhaust gases’ temperature, engine block’s temperature and fuel consumption were considered. The results from the experiment showed that diesel fuel can be partially substituted by biodiesel/diesel blends, under most operating conditions. This is indicated by the comparison to unmodified engine’s performance parameters and emissions
