Equilibrio y estabilidad del cuerpo humano

Abstract

El equilibrio del cuerpo humano es especialmente inestable, porque el centro de gravedad se encuentra por encima de la base de sustentación en la mayoría de las actividades de locomoción (bipedestación, marcha, etc.). Existe un gran interés socio-económico en conocer los factores que afectan a la estabilidad del equilibrio, cómo evaluarlos y cómo mejorarlos, especialmente en poblaciones adultas y con discapacidad. Desde un punto de vista biomecánico, estos factores pueden analizarse a través de la estática, existiendo instrumental específico (ej. estabilómetros) y registros (ej. estabilometrías) que nos permiten tener una valoración objetiva de la estabilidad del equilibrio. En el presente capítulo se revisan los principales protocolos y consideraciones metodológicas a tener en cuenta para valorar la estabilidad del equilibrio en bipedestación: posición que debe adoptar el sujeto; tests que pueden utilizarse para valorar la contribución de los sistemas somatosensorial, vestibular y visual; duración de los tests; etc. Igualmente se analizan los factores que científicamente se han demostrado que pueden influir en la estabilidad del equilibrio, tales son el deporte practicado, la edad, el sexo, el nivel de actividad física y la fatiga. Finalmente se establece una asociación entre la baja estabilidad del equilibrio y el riesgo de lesión en deportistas de diferentes disciplinas, racopilando varios estudios que proponen rutinas de entrenamiento propioceptivo que han sido efectivas para mejorar la estabilidad y disminuir el riesgo de lesión
