Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada consigue pues dar nuevo sentido en la captatio benevolentiae del De rebus a una serie de motivos «tópicos» mediante un proceso de renovación que se organiza según dos modalidades complementarias: la combinación de tales motivos para alcanzar un propósito determinado y el tratamiento formal de estos mismos motivos mediante el cual se crean correspondencias constantes entre significante y significado
