Abstract

Esta novela, publicada cuatro después que Abril rojo recibiera el premio Alfaguara en 2006, se diferencia de esta última, novela realista que toma lugar en los años posteriores al Sendero Luminoso. Tan cerca de la vida se desarrolla en un período no determinado en Tokio, donde el protagonista, Max, llega a una convención de inteligencia artificial. Allí, similar a como sucede en Lost in Translation de Sofia Coppola, Max se siente desolado y con problemas para comunicarse con el resto de habitantes de la ciudad, y sólo logra tener unos pequeños y extraños intercambios con los asistentes a la convención. Es así como, a lo largo de la narración, Max parece llevar una vida en la cual él no tiene control alguno. Sus días están llenos de sugerencias de su teléfono inteligente, de encargos de su jefe, o de planes organizados por otros asistentes a la convención.
