Abstract

[EN] In recent years, human population growth, rapid urbanization of coastal areas, and increased use of artificial light at night (ALAN) are generating multiple impacts on all taxa, ultimately affecting the fitness of organisms and modifying ecosystems. Among the organisms that ALAN can affect are sea turtles, which are widely distributed across the planet, with each species presenting a different degree of threat, mainly due to the combination of climate change and coastal development. The aim of this study is to review the existing literature on the effect of light pollution on sea turtles, organisms that require environmental light signals for orientation. To this end, a systematic structured search was conducted using keywords covering the problem. The results highlight the impacts and consequences of ALAN on processes essential to turtles, such as nesting and orientation abilities, which are altered by different light sources, their intensity, and the distance from them. Finally, based on the literature, possible lines of action and research are proposed to reduce ALAN levels and thus mitigate its impact in marine turtles, which includes the development of new forms of lighting and coastal area management plans.
