Abstract

During the first decades of the 20th century, the province of Santander underwent a process of construction of a regional imaginary promoted by a traditionalist and historicist intelligentsia. This phenomenon, imbricated in the process of Spanish nationalisation and in a European context of the rise of the «small homelands», had the immediate consequence of interpreting the history and identity of La Montaña for the first time independently of Castile. The idealisation of the rural world and traditional society contrasted with the growing industrialisation and incipient mass culture that characterised regional modernity. The cultural dynamism of the city of Santander and other population centres contributed significantly to the dissemination of the regional imaginary through new institutions and their publications. The Dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera accelerated the process and also saw the first debate on Cantabrian regionalism.
