Abstract

[EN] This paper analyzes the role of the Energy Return on Investment (EROI) as a key indicator in Energy Economics. In a global context defined by the energy transition and the fight against climate change, the EROI provides a measure of the actual efficiency of different energy sources, beyond prices or direct economic costs. Through a systematic literature review following the PRISMA methodology, relevant studies published between 2010 and 2025 have been identified and examined. The analysis compares renewable and non-renewable sources, as well as the performance of public and private energy companies. The findings show that renewable sources tend to achieve more sustainable EROI values in the long term, although they face initial technological investment challenges. In addition, companies that invest in innovation and energy diversification tend to perform better. These results confirm the usefulness of EROI as an energy, economic and strategic assessment tool, both for energy companies and policy-makers.
