Additive Manufacture from ceramics in Aerospace industry

Abstract

[EN] The aerospace industry stands out as one of the most restrictive ones, in terms of the operating requirements that its components must satisfy, due to the consequences that could result from their failure. Therefore, the selection of the material for the design of these components is of critical importance. Furthermore, due to the hight cost of production and geometric complexity of these components, the development of the technology that makes the process both cheaper and easier is essential. The additive manufacturing of ceramic materials satisfies both requirements, in addition to allowing the improvement of both mechanical and thermal properties of the components manufactured. There are several additive manufacturing methods that allow ceramic materials to be processed, however, stereolithography and electron beam melting additive manufacturing seem to stand out, compared to the rest, in the field of aeronautics. Using these technologies, it has been possible to introduce some improvements in different components of the turbojet engine of modern aircrafts. Among them are the combustion chamber, the exhaust nozzle or the turbine blades. Regarding the last ones mentioned, several studies have concluded that, through the application of additive manufacturing of ceramic materials during their manufacture, it is possible to significantly reduce emissions of environmentally harmful gases, as well as to extend their useful life, thus reducing maintenance costs. Moreover, the addition of the SiC ceramic matrix composite via stereolithography, makes it possible to significantly improve the mechanical properties of this component.
