Abstract

[EN] Environmental enrichment is firmly recognised as one of the strategies to achieve or increase the welfare of animals in captivity, which is an issue of great importance today. One of the factors that can disrupt animal welfare and produce negative effects is being subjected to stressful conditions. This study focused on zebrafish, one of the animal models widely used in scientific research, with the purpose to analyse if environmental enrichment can attenuate the negative effects of stress in teleost fish. To carry out the study, female zebrafish were selected and assigned to two groups: a control group and an experimental group with an enriched environment. Each group was then submitted to an unpredictable chronic stress protocol for a period of 7 days. The effects on the behaviour of the fish were evaluated using the Novel Tank Test. The data obtained show that stress and environmental enrichment do not modify kinetic parameters, however, they affect the distribution of the fish in the tank zones, favouring a more exploratory behaviour by the fish kept in an enriched environment
