Abstract

Esta obra la hemos dividido en dos bloques temáticos de carácter geográfico. Por un lado, el monacato en España, con trabajos que abarcan desde la Edad Media hasta el siglo XX, con algunos estudios más generales como los de Ilenia Gentile o Aitana Finestrat, y otros que nos conducen por diferentes aspectos y lugares de la geografía española, como las dos Castillas, León, Asturias, Galicia o Aragón. En el segundo bloque, se ilustra cómo el mundo americano, siendo heredero del español en estos asuntos, conoció también una gran expansión del monacato femenino, frente a la ausencia del masculino, pues quienes debían ser protegidas eran las mujeres, por su condición de descendientes de españoles, a las que había que dar un futuro cuando no se podía optar o no se quería por la vida matrimonial. En ese ámbito, vamos a encontrarnos con estudios sobre Santo Domingo,
