No es poco lo que se ha escrito sobre la condición social de la mujer en Grecia y Roma. También se ha escrito bastante sobre la mujer en la Edad Media, época en la que, en términos generales, su postración fue evidente. A este respecto, no hay más que pensar en el hecho de que los reyes medievales acostumbraban a tener amantes abiertamente y sin tapujos. Esto mismo les estaba vedado a las reinas o, simplemente, no les era posible mostrar tal franqueza.
