Abstract

El monacato femenino al decir de Chaunu "es una de las victorias feministas del siglo XVI en España". Probablemente fue una verdadera válvula de escape para muchas mujeres de la España Moderna y por endo de América, como tantas veces se ha repetido y podemos volver a repetir al tratar sobre Mariana de Jesús. Las biografías que se han realizado sobre la monja de origen vasco que nos ocupa, lo han hecho desde la óptica de relanzar su imagen, igno­rando una realidad histórica que explica muy bien la situación en la que se encontraba la ciudad de Quito y en la que se vio inmersa la propia Mariana de Jesús .
