Abstract

La esclavitud, calificada a menudo como "la mayor lacra de la humanidad", no planteaba dudas en cuanto a su vigencia durante el siglo XVI. Existían mati­zaciones y consideraciones, pero casi nadie ponía en entredicho su existencia como tal, a pesar de que Las Siete Partidas de Alfonso X ya manifestaban que "la libertad es la más noble cosa del mundo; así, por el contrario, la servidum­bre es la más vil cosa del mundo". Sin embargo, ya para el siglo XVI son muchos los teóricos que piensan que no existe la esclavitud por naturaleza , ni siquiera de los negros, que habían comenzado a llegar en número considera­ble a los mercados peninsulares durante el siglo XV y cuyo comercio adquiri­ría un mayor auge tras el descubrimiento de América. En esa línea de quienes niegan la existencia de la esclavitud por naturaleza parece estar el mismo Cipriano de la Huerga. Cierto es que no lo manifiesta en el parecer que aquí reproducimos, pero puede deducirse de otra de las obras que se publican en este mismo tomo, en concreto en la Competencia de la hor­miga con el hombre. En ese escrito, realizado en 1559, nos dice Cipriano tex­tualmente :"¿Y adónde nunca se vio que entre nosotras las hormigas o entre los otros animales una fiera sirviese a otra?.
