Abstract

Documentaries are translated using different audiovisual translation (AVT) modes. In Spain, the most commonly used AVT mode is dubbing (off-screen dubbing of the narrator's voice plus voice-over of the others). However, subtitling is becoming an increasingly frequent alternative. This is a case study to compare the dubbed and subtitled translations into Spanish of a portrait/historical documentary shot in English language. The three translation modes analysed are feasible, being able to solve synchrony and adjustment issues; however, in terms of maintaining the registry and tone of the source, both subtitles and voice-over are less accurate than off-screen dubbing. As subtitling results in a lower loss of semantic information than expected, it is a valid mode to be used when translating documentaries. This is mostly due to the high density of subtitles. Thus, hypothetically, the global perception of the target text might be improved if subtitles were reduced in those cases when loss of information is compensated via other channels (i.e. visual and acoustic non-verbal).
