Abstract

La reproducció era el deure essencial de la dona romana, però, com demostren les fonts, tenir un fill era un acte tan perillós que s’equiparava amb la guerra. Des del punt de mèdic, autors com Sorà d’Efes escrivien tractats dedicats a l’obstetrícia, on s’intentaven oferir solucions que permetessin salvar la mare i l’infant. Al mateix temps, es coneixen diversos mètodes de control de la natalitat, que ajudaven a una dona a evitar concebre o a desfer-se d’un embaràs. Tot i així, la reproducció a l’Antiga Roma no era només un assumpte biològic, sinó també un afer estatal; d’aquesta manera, les pràctiques ginecològiques tenien una base ètica i jurídica, encara que fos implícita. L’objectiu d’aquest treball és esbrinar quina era la concepció ètica darrere de les decisions reproductives. Es consultaran els textos del manual de ginecologia de Sorà d’Efes (s. I- II d.C) per esbrinar com eren les pràctiques obstètriques i quin objectiu tenien. Per aconseguir una visió més complerta, es compararan els textos de Sorà amb els de dos autors contemporanis: Plini el Vell (s. I d.C) i Galè (s. II-III d.C).
