Spiral antenna design with MATLAB

Spiral antenna design with MATLAB

Abstract

This paper presents a quantitative analysis of spiral antennas based on designs and simulations performed in the MATLAB software suite. First, a thorough review of previous scientific literature used as a conceptual basis for the realization of this work is presented. Based on this review, the parameters of interest to be analyzed with this type of antennas are discussed and visualized in other types of spiral antennas to justify the choice of this type of spiral. Subsequently, the simulation process used to analyze various equiangular spiral antennas in MATLAB is described in detail. The first simulation is performed by adjusting the antenna dimensions based on a previously fixed operating frequency range and keeping the rest of the characteristics at their default value, from which several plots of relevant parameters are obtained, to be then analyzed. Subsequently, the effect of varying the number of turns of the equiangular spiral on the performance of the antenna in its operating frequency band is analyzed. Once the influence of this parameter has been verified, an optimization of the number of turns that maximizes the gain in the center of the operating frequency band is performed. Finally, the effects on the antenna radiation are evaluated by including an infinite reflector plane before it, generating an increase in the gain and a unidirectional radiation, but sacrificing stability in some of its parameters.
