SOCJOLOGIA GOSPODARKI A SOCJOLOGIA EKONOMICZNA

Abstract

The paper is an attempt to precise two terms that Polish researchers link with the term ‘‘economic sociology’’. The proposed approach calls for the sociology of economics to focus on the creation of a sociological theory of economics and to influence the non-economic areas of social life, and for economic sociology to focus on the examination of the influence of the economic structure on the remaining spheres of social life. How dangerous it is for a sociologist to follow the latter path maybe exemplified by two theories developed by George Homans and Gary Becker. Both, to quote Becker’s words, despite the differences distinguishing them from each other, illustrate an approach that Becker termed ‘‘economic imperialism’’ i.e. the appropriation by economy of the domains that exceed the areas of interest that are assigned. To recall and making a travesty of the distinction made by the eminent Polish methodologist of the pre Word War II period Leon Petraz˙ycki, we might refer to the ‘‘jumping theories’’ (as different to the ‘‘limping concepts’’ that are too narrow for the objects they refer too).
