Abstract

Scharakteryzowano w nim praktyki podejmowane w okresie przednowoczesnym. We wszystkich częściach zostały pokazane przede wszystkim relacje pomiędzy praktykami symbolicznymi i technicznymi.

The main aim of the thesis is to describe ways in which the living handle human remains and dead body in the western culture. A special attention is given to practices undertaken after genocides. The thesis consists of three chapters: two of them are theoretical and the third one is based upon research. The first chapter analyzes practices concerning the corpses from the Middle Ages to Present Times. The second chapter describes ways of handling the remains in a situation of mass death. The first part of this chapter characterizes practices in occidental society in Pre-Modern era. The main part of this chapter focuses on management of dead bodies after modern genocide (e.g. searching and identification of corpses, medicolegal examination, commemoration of the dead). The last chapter analyzes the ways in which people have been handling human remains at former concentration and death camps: Auschwitz-Birkenau and Kulmhof from the final evacuation in 1945 to 2010. The analysis is based on research including: 1) documentary analysis (published and unpublished documents, memories and accounts, press articles), 2) in-depth interviews with museum staff members, 3) observations conducted in former camps. The findings of the research project suggest that the entire period can be divided into three parts: 1) first months or years after the liberation of the camps, 2) the period of the Polish People’s Republic, 3) the eighties and the period after 1989. In each of these periods relationships between two types of practices: symbolic and technical are presented.
