In this paper the term „childhood” is understood, following Ariès and Van Den Berg, as a semantically changing process with different meanings depending on culture and historical time. Various readings of the words „child” and „childhood” are analyzed in historical context, with the focus on the meanings assigned to these words in contemporary societies.
