Mechanizmy dyspersji roślinożernych roztoczy z rodziny Eriophyidae

Abstract

Dispersal is a process with a core importance for any species. Understanding the causes and consequences of dispersal is one of the main challenges in ecology, especially in the view of the recent and ongoing global changes and the increase in biological invasions. The aim of my PhD project is to investigate the dispersal strategies in phytophagous mites that infest wheat. Specifically, I tested the importance of various ecological factors in efficient dispersal and host colonisation in two eriophyoid mites: the wheat curl mite (WCM) Aceria tosichella and the cereal rust mite (CRM) Abacarus hystrix. My dissertation consists of three scientific publications in which I answer the following questions: i) do these two species express the behaviours that increase the departure probability? ii) what is the role of dispersal factors in their passive spreading? iii) which factors influence their settlement and colonisation ability? In the first article, I found that wind is the main factor that influences dispersal behaviours. In the second article, I showed that passive dispersal of WCM and CRM is effective only using wind currents. In the third article, I concluded that the colonisation ability of WCM and CRM is determined by the dispersal success and the high number of founders. I also underlined the importance of active dispersal for host colonisation by WCM and CRM. These results shed light at the mechanisms that allow for the successful dispersal of two cereal-feeding eriophyoid mite species. Moreover, I explain the high invasive potential of WCM as this species disperses and colonises new plants with higher success than CRM.
