Materialność – Polityka – Emocje. Pomniki Poznania i Strasburga (XIX–XX wiek)

Abstract

Presented thesis is devoted to the 19th and 20th century memorials situated in the public space. In the thesis I investigate the three main functions of memorials: their materiality, the way they are involved in the politics and people’s emotions they invoke and channel. The thesis also explores how monuments influence on the identity of cities’ inhabitants and how they create the common understanding of the past. Therefore the aim of the research is also to analyze how both form and content of memorials convey a specific historical knowledge, and how various visions of the past are shaped by these objects. Moreover it has to be underlined that memorials are understood here as creative, active agents of both the public space they are situated in and people encountering them.Presented thesis is focused on comparative studies of two European cities: Poznan (Poland) and Strasbourg (France). Such a comparison is justified by the similarity of their historical experiences (incorporation into the German Empire, Nazi occupation, etc.) It also helps to state which functions of memorials are universal and which are shaped by their spatial, social and historical context. Thus there can be found different monumental representation of the parallel events in urban spaces of both cities. The research helps to understand not only the mechanisms related to these memorials in the past, but also contribute to our understanding of the present-day modes of perception of the monuments by people coming across that kind of objects.
