Abstract

The concentration of particulate matter (Particulate Matter, PM) with aerodynamic diameter <10μm (PM10) and <2.5μm (PM2.5) are widely used parameters to determine the level of contamination of the air we breathe. This causes approximately 4.2 million premature deaths per year according to the World Health Organization, in addition to the fact that in Colombia air pollution is the environmental risk that causes the greatest number of deaths per year, it is estimated that 8% of mortality annual is due to environmental risk factors. This means that the monitoring of these variables is of vital importance in the country and the world. Based on the German Citizen Science project https://luftdaten.info, optical PM sensors and the integrated System-on-a-Chip system are used in the construction of two low-cost prototypes that allow remote quality monitoring of the air in the area where they are located in the Barranquilla Metropolitan Area, including temperature and relative humidity, evaluating their performance, reliability and energy consumption. Different tests such as the calculation of the Pearson correlation were performed to find the relationship between the different variables. Additionally, Cronbach's alphas were estimated for the variables PM10 and PM2.5 and their relevance in the measurement of the sensors was determined, in addition to the measurement of the powers of the modules, obtaining favorable results.
