Abstract

AbstractThis essay emphasizes the power of communication to affect democracy. An open, horizontal, and free communication is essential for the existence of a democratic society and must be constructed by means of the participation of all sectors. A system of laws and rules must guarantee the balance in the access to mass media, since communication can also be a weapon for the suppression of diversity. The present situation is critical and worrisome. The increasing privatization, the concentration of property in media enterprises and the globalization of communication frequently constitute important barriers on the way towards democracy
